New Year. New Resolutions. New Blog.



I often shy away from writing about New Year’s resolutions. The reality is that after a burst of energy in January, most people fall off the wagon. Statistics show that only 9.2 percent of people ever achieve their New Year’s resolutions. You know the drill. The most common resolutions include:

  • Quit Smoking
  • Quit drinking.
  • Exercise more and lose weight.
  • Spend more time with friends and family.
  • Read more books.
  • Eat more healthy food or stop eating junk food.
  • Meet new people.
  • Travel more.
  • Yada, yada, yada……..

I admit, I have gone on a health kick since the holidays. I ran up a nice hefty bill at Whole Foods last week buying every vegetable in sight. I came home with sodium free bread and low sodium chips that both taste like cardboard.  I have been good so far, eating it all, though I know it will be tough to sustain.


So, what is the answer? Well I say we shouldn’t wait until the beginning of the year to make changes, only to potentially fail and call it a day. Change and reflection should be built into our every day life with the ability to set new challenges or goals at any given time during the year. Growth and evolution is a fluid process.

For me, the last 6 months of 2018 have been a time of reflection of how I have spent my time and how I want to spend my time.

As one friend told me, “It is important to feed your soul. What do you do to feed your soul?”

Her comment stays with me every day. I realized some of the work I have been doing is “filling my day”, but not “filling my soul” and so in 2018, I start on a new path of finding something which does feed my soul.


Writing my blog has been inspiring and a creative outlet. I would say it does feed my soul when I hear of those who have read it and have been touched in some way. I admit, my blog writing has been inconsistent and sparse compared to other years as I found it more and more challenging to find “the perfect topic” and write the perfect post.

I will be making some changes. My blog name will change as well as my target audience. My goal will to be to write more frequently, reach out to a broader audience and create a community of people to join into the conversation.

As I begin this new project, I would love to hear any comments or suggestions you may have. My goal will be to write about living your best life after cancer and include writing about my travels, health, aging, advocacy, and resources for both those diagnosed with cancer and those living after cancer treatment.

I am a two-time cancer survivor and patient advocate. Diagnosed as a young adult, at age 25 with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I had to quickly face the reality of life’s curveballs. My treatment offered a potential cure while at the same time, underestimated the long term side effects including a secondary cancer (breast cancer) nine years later. Shortly after my breast cancer treatment ended, my youthful, seemingly healthy mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and passed a year later. I have lived the cancer experience as a patient and a family member/ caregiver and understand both sides. Life after treatment is often challenging emotionally and physically and there is a gap in providing needed support. I don’t consider cancer a gift as it is not something I would ever want to give to someone. Rather, I view cancer as an opportunity; one I received at an early point in my life to live intentionally, understanding how things can change at any moment. I live without regrets, fully understanding the gift and fragility of life.

  1. I agree with you that resolutions never get accomplished. I don’t even bother with them. If I think about it at all, I just make one. You have to create steps towards the goal. So a list of them is just overwhelming. It’s no wonder people fail.
